Il s\u2019agit de la premi\u00e8re partie de la cantate \u00ab\u00a0The Song Of Hiawatha\u00a0\u00bb, compos\u00e9e en 1899, alors que le compositeur n\u2019avait que 24 ans. &#8211;<em>Cliquer sur l\u2019image pour la voir en plus grand<\/em>-.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Samuel Coleridge-Taylor \u00e9tait un musicien m\u00e9tis, mort relativement jeune &#8211;<em>1875-1912<\/em>-, qui, de par ses origines, eut bien du mal \u00e0 se faire une place dans l\u2019Angleterre edwardienne, encore pleine de pr\u00e9jug\u00e9s. El\u00e8ve de Stanford, bon symphoniste dont je vous ai d\u00e9j\u00e0 un peu parl\u00e9 ici ou l\u00e0, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor acquit cependant une certaine notori\u00e9t\u00e9, voire un succ\u00e8s important avec cette cantate &#8211;<em>dont la cr\u00e9ation, semble-t-il, ut adoub\u00e9e par Elgar himself<\/em>-, les Anglais raffolant des grande oeuvres chorales depuis Handel.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/latelierdediablotin.fr\/WordPress3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/SColeridge_Taylor_042021.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-10455\" src=\"https:\/\/latelierdediablotin.fr\/WordPress3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/SColeridge_Taylor_042021.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"209\" height=\"339\" srcset=\"https:\/\/latelierdediablotin.fr\/WordPress3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/SColeridge_Taylor_042021.jpg 209w, https:\/\/latelierdediablotin.fr\/WordPress3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/SColeridge_Taylor_042021-185x300.jpg 185w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 209px) 100vw, 209px\" \/><\/a>Aux Etats-Unis, il fut surnomm\u00e9 le \u00ab\u00a0Mahler Africain\u00a0\u00bb suite \u00e0 quelques tourn\u00e9es assez triomphales qu\u2019il y effectua et malgr\u00e9 la forte s\u00e9gr\u00e9gation raciale qui r\u00e9gnait dans ce pays &#8211;<em>il fut m\u00eame, honneur supr\u00eame re\u00e7u par le pr\u00e9sident Roosevelt (Theodore)-<\/em>. Ainsi, alors qu\u2019il n\u2019\u00e9tait autoris\u00e9 \u00e0 diriger que des chorales d\u2019hommes noirs au d\u00e9part, la derni\u00e8re chorale qu\u2019il dirigea \u00e9tait exclusivement compos\u00e9e d\u2019hommes blancs. Il semblerait, selon divers t\u00e9moignages d&rsquo;\u00e9poque, qu&rsquo;il fut \u00e9galement un excellent pianiste.<br \/>\nSamuel Coleridge-Taylor eut un fils qu\u2019il appela\u2026 Hiawatha !<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A sa mort &#8211;<i>vraisemblablement, en plus d&rsquo;un tabagisme\u00a0cons\u00e9quent, de surmenage, comme Mendelssohn et au m\u00eame \u00e2ge que lui !<\/i> -, son oeuvre retomba dans un oubli assez profond, hors justement cette cantate red\u00e9couverte par Malcolm Sargent, redoutable d\u00e9fricheur d\u2019oeuvres chorales anglaises plus ou moins obscures &#8211;<em>le coffret \u00e9voqu\u00e9 l&rsquo;autre jour en contient un certain nombre\u2026<\/em>-.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">La cantate est fond\u00e9e sur un long po\u00e8me \u00e9pique, \u00ab\u00a0Le cantique de Hiawatha\u00a0\u00bb, \u00e9crit par <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Henry_Longfellow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Henry Wadsworth Longfellow<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, qui narre l\u2019histoire fictive d\u2019un chef Indien, Hiawatha, de la tribu des Ojibw\u00e9s, et sa romance tragique avec Minnehata, une indienne Dakota. Elle se situe au sud du Lac Sup\u00e9rieur &#8211;<i>qui marque la fronti\u00e8re entre le Canada et les Etas-Unis, r\u00e9gion initialement peupl\u00e9e par les\u00a0Indiens <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ojibw\u00e9s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Ojibw\u00e9s<\/strong><\/span><\/a>&#8211;<\/i>, et a contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 r\u00e9habiliter l\u2019image de l\u2019Indien comme un \u00ab\u00a0noble sauvage\u00a0\u00bb aux Etats-Unis. A mon avis, qui n\u2019engage que moi, \u00ab\u00a0Le Derniers des Mohicans\u00a0\u00bb, de Fenimore Cooper, est plus int\u00e9ressant &#8211;<em>et plus facile<\/em>&#8211; \u00e0 lire, avec l\u2019int\u00e9gralit\u00e9 de la saga de \u00ab\u00a0Bas-De-Cuir\u00a0\u00bb\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/latelierdediablotin.fr\/WordPress3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/CanotAlgonquin18042021.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10459\" src=\"https:\/\/latelierdediablotin.fr\/WordPress3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/CanotAlgonquin18042021.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"347\" srcset=\"https:\/\/latelierdediablotin.fr\/WordPress3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/CanotAlgonquin18042021.jpg 750w, https:\/\/latelierdediablotin.fr\/WordPress3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/CanotAlgonquin18042021-300x139.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Evidemment, <strong>c&rsquo;est ici que la controverse intervient<\/strong>, sans quoi le titre de cette notule serait incompr\u00e9hensible ! <del>Curieusement<\/del>, le mouvement \u00ab\u00a0#BlackLivesMatter\u00a0\u00bb a contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 un vrai regain de popularit\u00e9 aux Etats-Unis, d\u2019une part parce que Coleridge-Taylor avait contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 propager l\u2019information que Beethoven \u00e9tait en r\u00e9alit\u00e9 m\u00e9tis et qu\u2019il aurait eu 1\/16\u00e8 de sang africain; d\u2019autre part parce que ce courant pr\u00e9conise de jouer exclusivement des musiciens noirs ou m\u00e9tis : Scott Joplin, le Chevalier de Saint-Georges ou encore Edmond D\u00e9d\u00e9. Evidemment, la musique y perdrait beaucoup\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Mais foin de ces querelles ! Cette cantate contient r\u00e9ellement de tr\u00e8s beaux passages et m\u00e9rite ind\u00e9niablement de demeurer au r\u00e9pertoire !
