L&rsquo;admirable travail de pr\u00e9paration de Roald Amundsen pour son exp\u00e9dition, par opposition avec l&rsquo;ent\u00eatement de Robert Falcon Scott, autoritaire et p\u00e9tri de certitudes, sont d\u00e9sormais mis en avant pour expliquer l&rsquo;\u00e9chec de l&rsquo;exp\u00e9dition anglaise.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Apr\u00e8s la sortie du film, Vaughan Williams continua \u00e0 composer sur le m\u00eame th\u00e8me pour aboutir, en 1952, \u00e0 une oeuvre de dimension symphonique : la Sinfonia antartica &#8211;<em>cliquer sur l&rsquo;image pour la voir en plus grand<\/em>-. L\u2019orchestration de cette oeuvre en cinq mouvements -les deux derniers sont encha\u00eenes- fait appel, outre l&rsquo;orchestre classique traditionnel, \u00e0 une soliste soprano qui chante sans paroles, \u00e0 un modeste ch\u0153ur de femmes \u00e0 trois voix et \u00e0 un large instrumentarium avec orgue, piano machine \u00e0 vent et un panel vari\u00e9 de percussions. Chaque mouvement \u00e9galement est pr\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9 par une citation \u00e9crite sur la partition. Dans certaines interpr\u00e9tations, ces citations sont lues avant chaque mouvement, ce n&rsquo;est pas le cas pour la version de ce jour, enregistr\u00e9e par Sir Adrian Boult en 1969.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>1er mouvement &#8211; Pr\u00e9lude<\/strong><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">To suffer woes which Hope thinks infinite,<\/span> <\/i>\/ <em><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">To forgive wrongs darker than death or night,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">To defy Power, which seems omnipotent \u2026<\/span> <\/i>\/ <em><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Neither to change nor falter nor repent,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">This \u2026 is to be<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Good, great and joyous, beautiful and free.<\/span> <\/i>\/ <em><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">This is alone Life, Joy, Empire and Victory!<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">-extrait de \u00ab\u00a0Prom\u00e9th\u00e9e d\u00e9livr\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb, de Shelley-<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Le \u00ab\u00a0th\u00e8me h\u00e9ro\u00efque\u00a0\u00bb du Pr\u00e9lude constitue le g\u00e9n\u00e9rique de d\u00e9but du film et il appara\u00eet de fa\u00e7on r\u00e9currente tout au long de la symphonie de l\u2019ouvrage. Ce mouvement correspond, dans le film, au moment o\u00f9 que les explorateurs se pr\u00e9parentet \u00e0 la pr\u00e9sentation des principaux protagonistes de l&rsquo;exp\u00e9dition \u00ab\u00a0Terra Nova\u00a0\u00bb. Puis, la musique \u00e9voque ensuite les vastes \u00e9tendues glaciales de l\u2019Antarctique par des percussions &#8211;<em>glockenspiel, xylophone et vibraphone<\/em>-, une machine \u00e0 vent, le piano et le c\u00e9lesta, des voix fun\u00e8bres des choeurs et les vocalises sans paroles de la soliste soprano.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>2\u00e8me mouvement &#8211; Scherzo<\/strong><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">There go the ships:<\/span> \/ <span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">And there is that Leviathan<\/span><\/i> \/ <em><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Whom thou hast made to take his pastime therein.<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">-Psaume 104-<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Le scherzo, intitul\u00e9 \u00abL\u00e9viathan\u00bb, est tir\u00e9 du passage \u00abWhales\u00bb &#8211;<em>baleines<\/em>&#8211; de la musique du film lors de l&rsquo;arriv\u00e9e du Terra nova dans la <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Baie_des_Baleines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Baie des Baleines.<\/strong><\/span><\/a> Le Scherzo en constitue un remaniement. Les baleines sont incarn\u00e9es par le cor anglais les vents graves, le tuba et le violoncelle. Sur la banquise, les pingouins sd\u00e9filent au son des clarinettes et des trompettes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>3\u00e8me mouvement &#8211; Lanscape<\/strong><br \/>\n<em style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Ye ice falls! Ye that from the mountain\u2019s brow<\/em> \/ <span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><em>Adown enormous ravines slope amain \u2013<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<em style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Torrents, methinks, that heard a mighty voice,<\/em> \/ <span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><em>And stopped at once amid their maddest plunge!<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><em>Motionless torrents! Silent cataracts!<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><em>-Hymn Before Sunrise, Coleridge-<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">La musique provient de la s\u00e9quence du film o\u00f9 l\u2019exp\u00e9dition de Scott entreprend la difficile ascension d\u2019un glacier g\u00e9ant &#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Glacier_Beardmore\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Glacier Beardmore<\/strong><\/span><\/a>-. La musique \u00e9voque la lente et p\u00e9nible avanc\u00e9e des explorateurs \u00e0 travers les masses de glace mouvantes. A la fin du mouvement, les cloches graves et la tr\u00e8s douce musique qui suit correspondant dans le film \u00e0 la mort du capitaine Oates, qui, sur le chemin du retour, souffrant de gelures aux pieds, se laissa mourir de froid pour ne pas retarder l&rsquo;exp\u00e9dition en quittant sa tente, de nuit :\u00a0\u00bbJe vais simplement sortir et ce la pourrait prendre un certain temps\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>5\u00e8me mouvement &#8211; \u00c9pilogue<\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><em>I do not regret this journey \u2026 We took risks, we knew we took them; things have come out against us, and therefore we have no cause for complaint.<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><em>-Journal de R.F.
