Il a m\u00eame rassembl\u00e9, dans une petite pi\u00e8ce obscure, son\u00a0\u00ab\u00a0Temple du pass\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb, tous les objets qui ont appartenu \u00e0 Marie.<br \/>\nPaul vit dans le pass\u00e9 en refusant d&rsquo;affronter sa vie sans elle. Mais Brigitta, sa veille servante qui est la seule \u00e0 pourvoir p\u00e9n\u00e9trer dans cette pi\u00e8ce la montre \u00e0 Frank, l&rsquo;ami de Paul. Ce dernier arrive et lui raconte, encore sous le coup de l&rsquo;\u00e9motion, qu&rsquo;il a vu Marie vivante. Un peu plus tard, Brigitta fait entrer dans la maison, une magnifique danseuse, Marietta, qui ressemble beaucoup \u00e0 Marie.<br \/>\nCependant Marietta est la vie m\u00eame, elle aime le plaisir et le mouvement; elle reproche m\u00eame \u00e0 Paul sa tristesse. Celui-ci ne r\u00e9ussit pas \u00e0 rester insensible au charme de Marietta. Il \u00e9tait donc d\u00e9chir\u00e9 entre\u00a0 son attirance pour Marietta et sa d\u00e9votion pour Marie. Marietta lui manque, il br\u00fble d&rsquo;envie de la revoir. Il se cache derri\u00e8re un arbre pour l&rsquo;observer danser en compagnie d&rsquo;une troupe de th\u00e9\u00e2tre. Paul, jaloux, fait des reproches \u00e0 Marietta mais elle ne r\u00e9pond rien. Le d\u00e9sir est plus fort : Marietta veut aller chez Paul pour lui faire oublier Marie.<br \/>\nMarietta appara\u00eet dans le Temple du pass\u00e9, au milieu des portraits de Marie. Elle tente de s\u00e9duire Paul mais il r\u00e9siste. Elle devient alors railleuse et moqueuse; elle prend la m\u00e8che de cheveux, l&rsquo;enroule autour de son cou. Paul, fou de rage, l&rsquo;\u00e9trangle puis murmure\u00a0\u00ab\u00a0Mainteant, c&rsquo;est tout \u00e0 fait comme Marie\u00a0\u00bb. Paul se r\u00e9veille, ses yeux cherchent Marietta, morte, mais rien. Elle entre alors pour checher son ombrelle, il sait qu&rsquo;il ne l&rsquo;a reverra plus. Frank arrive en proposant \u00e0 Paul de partir. Paul accepte de fuir Bruges avec lui apr\u00e8s avoir lanc\u00e9 un dernier regard au portrait.<\/em>\u00ab\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Die tote Stadt fut cr\u00e9\u00e9 tardivement en France \u00e0 la sc\u00e8ne &#8211;<em>Strasbourg, 2001 et j&rsquo;y \u00e9tais<\/em> \ud83d\ude42 <em>!<\/em> -, mais une version \u00ab\u00a0de concert\u00a0\u00bb &#8211;<em>c\u00e0d sans mise en sc\u00e8ne<\/em>&#8211; avait \u00e9t\u00e9 donn\u00e9e \u00e0 Paris en 1982.
